Editorial Donations Lose Appeal

22 May 2007

THE Salvation Army is showing a brave face after a fall in donations to last weekend's annual Red Shield Appeal doorknock.

Donations were down about $8000 in the Illawarra and almost $2 million across Australia. The organisation is still hopeful of receiving more money through other avenues, but it may be that a rethink is needed to determine if a doorknock is still a viable means of fundraising.

Years ago, schoolchildren were recruited to knock on their neighbourhood doors - these days, parents are worried about letting their children roam the streets.

Many families are simply too busy with their daily lives to spare a few hours to help out the charity.

They are no doubt the same families who are ready and willing to donate if someone else knocks on their door.

No-one can deny that the Salvos do a marvellous job of helping out disadvantaged families in our community.

However, lack of funding restricts how much help they can offer.

If you missed the doorknock, it's not too late to help the Salvos help those much less fortunate.
