ARMY WIVESMonday 9.30pm, Channel TenIt is, of course, the job of popular culture destined for mass consumption to rewrite troubling events in a palatable way. So Army Wives serves the useful and time-honoured purpose of making a bad war seem good by focusing on the sterling characters putting their lives on the line for flag and country. It is also a soap and the relationships at the heart of the series benefit from the martial setting. It allows some interesting scenarios to be explored: the way friendships can be suffocating as well as supportive; the challenges of maintaining family under the pressure of constant separation; the divided loyalties of the serving men and women. If you like your dramas simple, there's plenty to enjoy.
